Scholarships

Rio Tinto scholarships are available to students in mining related disciplines at selected universities.  In addition to providing funds to assist with study, scholarships with Rio Tinto offer the chance to gain 'real job' hands-on experience in their selected area of expertise through paid work experience with a Rio Tinto business unit.

Scholarship and paid work experience periods give students the chance to evaluate Rio Tinto as a prospective long-term employee.

Successful scholarship/paid work experience students are also given preferential consideration for places on the Rio Tinto graduate development programme.

Rio Tinto offers scholarships to students entering their second year of study in geoscience, mining, mechanical, electrical engineering and metallurgy at selected universities and colleges in the US, Canada, South Africa, the UK and Australia. Eligible universities are shown below. Initial contact should be made though the relevant department at the university.

Details and opportunities will appear in the Graduate newsletter.

There are a limited number of international internships available for geology, mining and metallurgy students in their third or fourth years.  There are usually priorities to those students who have already completed a paid work experience placement with Rio Tinto, who are enrolled in a course with the Federation of European Mining Programs, or who hold a Rio Tinto scholarship. Details will appear in the Graduate newsletter.
