The Mojave Desert is a rich and rewarding wilderness
The Rio Tinto Minerals borax operation is close to the town of Boron in southern California. The town has a population of around 2,500 and offers a range of modern municipal functions.
Boron is located in the picturesque Mojave Desert some 81 miles inland from Los Angeles and at the north east corner of the vast Edwards Air Base. The area is rich in geological and cultural history and is crossed by a network of walk trails and back roads.
A few miles to the west lies the recently developed - and still growing - California City with a population of around 9,500. It provides a number of sporting clubs, a modern golf course and a choice of cosmopolitan restaurants, cafés and bars.
Recreational pursuits in the surrounding area tend to be weather dependent. Daytime temperatures regularly reach the high thirties Celsius during the summer, although evenings are often much cooler.
Hiking, driving, trail biking and taking the many available historical, cultural and geological tours are popular pastimes.
