Fresh desert air and ancient canyons, next to a major US city
Located in Pinal County, Arizona, about 65 miles southeast of Phoenix and 97 miles from Tucson, Superior is considered one of Arizona's principal mining towns. It offers the usual municipal facilities such as schools, businesses, a library, shopping and leisure pursuits.
This is high desert country ideal for hiking, climbing, bird watching and photography. There are opportunities for boating on a number of nearby reservoirs. The 800 mile Arizona Trail passes close by and is a magnet for walkers, horse riders and mountain bikers.
Phoenix, the capital of Arizona, is now the sixth most populous US city.
Phoenix and the surrounding area has an arid climate and its average annual maximum temperature is the highest of any major US city. The temperature reaches or exceeds 38 degrees Celsius on an average of 89 days each year, and averages 32 degrees Celsius.
There are lots of large parks and recreational areas within the city and throughout southern Arizona, including South Mountain Park, the world's largest municipal reserve at 1,650 acres. Such areas afford an opportunity to visit ancient geological features and to understand the history and culture of the local native Americans.
