Ben
Geologist
I graduated in 1998 from the University of Alaska Fairbanks with a BS in Geology. I'm currently working on my Master's Degree in Geology under the Greens Creek tuition reimbursement program.
I've been interested in mining and geology for a long time. Rio Tinto was a good choice for me, in that the Greens Creek mine was relatively nearby and offered a diverse array of mining experiences.
I've been lucky to have worked at Greens Creek as both a summer intern during school and a professional staff member. Over time, I've worked or been exposed to production geology, ore interpretations, underground mapping, diamond drill planning, exploration mapping and sampling, and acid rock drainage sampling and analysis.
My current role at Greens Creek is that of a Production Geologist. In that capacity I work closely with mine operations, handling grade control, lining out blast rounds and assisting with production planning.
The Greens Creek Mine is located on Admiralty Island near Juneau, Alaska. Greens Creek is a subsidiary of Kennecott Minerals, part of the Rio Tinto Copper Group.
I look forward to a career in geology with more opportunities to develop mines from early exploration through production, in a work environment that offers career growth and positions of increasing scope and responsibility. Rio Tinto offers great potential in that regard with its numerous operations and commitment to professional development.
