Ancient island. Modern facilities.
The island of Anglesey is rugged and picturesque and boasts a history that goes back to megalithic times. There are many quaint villages, castles and places of interest. The island, which is a popular holiday destination, has an area of 276 square miles (715 km²) and offers excellent opportunities for hiking, cycling, golf, horse riding, sailing, fishing, bird watching and diving. There are four leisure and fitness centres and three modern swimming pools.
The geology of Anglesey is notably complex and is frequently used for geology field trips by schools and colleges. Younger strata rest upon a foundation of very old pre-Cambrian rocks that appear at the surface in several areas.
The largest town, Holyhead, is the busiest UK-Irish ferry port and home to the largest seagoing ferry in the world. Mainland Wales is just a short drive away across the spectacular Menai Bridge with Snowdonia National Park, Conway Castle, the resort town of Llandudno and the cities of Liverpool, Chester and Manchester not far away.
Many of Anglesey Aluminium Metal's employees live on the island, mostly around Holyhead. The town features all the usual civic facilities and is home to the annual Holyhead Festival, the award-winning Ucheldre Arts Centre and one of Wales' most famous male voice choirs.
