Iron Ore Company of Canada

Danny

Lab city is way better than I anticipated. I used to think it's only a working place for me but it proves to be wrong. I make quite a few friends here and go fishing, golfing and play basketball on the weekends. The town is one of best places I have seen for outdoor activities. I am very attracted to the graduate development programme. As an MBA student with engineering background, such a programme provides me a wide variety of opportunities to apply and expand the knowledge and skills I have learnt from schools.

Fernando

Junior process engineer

I work at the Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOCC) as a junior process engineer within the Concentrator Process Engineering Group. I have been recently hired for this position right after I finished school in Montreal (Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal). This is my seventh week here and I must say that I am pleasantly impressed with the job programme and the work culture here at IOCC. I highly recommend IOC's engineering-in-training programme because it mixes necessary ingredients for a healthy and successful professional growth such as challenge, responsibility and empowerment. Additionally, there is the fact that IOCC is one of the biggest iron ore mines in the world and at the same time, it is part of a larger mining corporation such as Rio Tinto. Indeed, working here makes you feel very comfortable with your professional development and also, feel very proud of being part of this awesome team.

Adam

Short term planning engineer

The things I have found here at IOCC are great people, a positive work environment, and a gorgeous city. My starting role as a short term planning engineer has proven to be both challenging and rewarding. I have already gained experience in a variety of areas including mine operations, quality control and mine planning. Through the graduate development programme I will rotate through two or three more roles giving me experience in all areas of this operation. I highly recommend the graduate development programme for its focus on professional growth and recommend Labrador City for its great people.

Gary

With more than ten years of experience and an MBA, I was looking for a challenging role that would allow me to leverage both my technical and business skills. I am glad that IOCC gave me just that- a high impact role that will keep me challenged. IOCC's graduate development programme is very well suited for MBAs since it allows them to build up a diverse set of skills- a grooming process and a fast track to a great career

I have also enjoyed the challenge of moving to Lab city- a scenic town of 9,000 friendly faces. The area allows a rich array of sports activities and is a good choice for someone with a family. My nine-year-old has just spent a great summer and has made scores of friends.

Renee

Business Commerce

I graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Business Commerce. I was hired by into the graduate development programme at IOCC. I began my career with the Purchasing Department dealing with procurement and logistical issues. Since then I have transitioned into various roles within the area- Buyer, Inventory Analyst, Contract Administration.

I would highly recommend the graduate development programme to any university graduate as it caters to their educational background. As well, it gives new graduates the opportunity to develop their skills and direct their career path.

Nicole

Mechanical Engineer

I graduated in 1998 from Memorial University with a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering Co-operative programme. Upon graduation, I was hired into the graduate development programme at IOCC. This programme has a two-year mandate to develop graduates via completion of four rotations in different areas of the value chain. The programme gave me the opportunity to work in all areas of the value chain, including the mine, concentrator, pellet plant and loading facilities in Sept-Iles. The programme provided the opportunity to work within numerous disciplines, including engineering, maintenance and operations. I believe the programme provided the experience and exposure to enable me, in five years, to move from a junior engineering role to a Superintendent role.

I would strongly recommend this programme it provided me the experience necessary for a global understanding of the company and helps the graduate understand the career path they want to pursue. Through the graduate development programme I was given the opportunity to direct my career and develop a diverse set of skills.

Oliver

Mining Engineer

In 2001 I received a Bachelor of Engineering (Mining) and a minor in management from McGill University. Following my graduation, I was hired in IOCC's graduate development programme. I first started as a junior engineer working with the mine planning group, moved into an activity supervisor role managing contractors then worked as a mine team leader.

Since I completed my time in the graduate programme, I have held a number of positions (Drill & Blast Engineer, Team Leader, Support Engineer and Operations Planner). I am currently working for Pilbara Iron in Western Australia as a Support Engineer being part of IOCC's new professional development programme.

I feel that IOCC recognise that the today's graduates are tomorrow's leaders and that I was given the opportunity to develop a set of skills through the different roles I was offered. I recommend the programme as I feel that it sets good foundation to individual willing to have a challenging career.
