Diavik Diamond Mines Inc.

You'll soon warm to the 'frozen north'

The Diavik Diamond Mine is situated on East Island in Lac de Gras, approximately 300 kilometres northeast of Yellowknife. The Arctic Circle is located just 220 kilometres north of the mine.

Employees at Diavik are housed in a permanent, three storey accommodation block where facilities include laundry, cable TV and personal telephone. Each room has an ensuite bathroom.

The surrounding area is dominated by Lac de Gras which is over 60 kilometres long and frozen for some eight months of the year. In summer the lake can be fished for a number of species including trout, cisco and the delightfully named slimy sculpin. Beyond the lake, rolling tundra dotted with numerous lakes and glacial deposits form a dream environment for hardy geologists and trekkers.  Local guides can organise tundra safaris to see grizzly bears and the vast caribou herds which migrate through the region in spring and autumn.

Yellowknife, the capital of the Northwest Territories and Canada's northern-most city, is 300 kilometres to the southwest by air. This thriving community is located on the north shore of Great Slave Lake and features endless summer days and incredible arctic scenery. A wide variety of outdoor adventure tours begin in Yellowknife and offer some great opportunities for those dedicated to an active and unique Arctic experience.
