Producing a quarter of Australia's primary aluminium

Rio Tinto Aluminium is a wholly owned subsidiary of Rio Tinto. The company provides about 26 per cent of Australia's total production of bauxite, 14 per cent of its alumina and 26 per cent of its primary aluminium. It is the world's eighth largest aluminium company.

The company operates a bauxite mine at Weipa in north west Queensland, Australia, the Yarwun refinery in Gladstone on Queensland's central east coast where the company also operates a power station.  Alumina from these refineries feeds smelters near Gladstone, at Bell Bay, Tasmania and on the Tiwai Peninsula near Invercargill on New Zealand's South Island.

Rio Tinto Aluminium also operates one of the world's top performing smelters in Anglesey, Wales which sources alumina primarily from Europe.

The mine at Weipa produces around 16 million tonnes of bauxite per annum (mtpa). The total smelting capacity is around 1.2 mtpa. 

Rio Tinto Aluminium's corporate headquarters are located in Brisbane, Queensland as too is the company's bauxite, alumina and aluminium sales and marketing teams.
