Computer systems engineer

A computer systems engineer with Rio Tinto is exposed to a wide variety of tasks. These include PL/SQL, VB.NET and embedded programming for supporting applications such as the main metal flow and warehousing application at Rio Tinto Aluminium smelting sites. The role also includes areas of hand held and mobile rugged PC support and development as well as the development of applications to support onsite operators in things like cell voltages, molten metal alloy composition, interfacing with PLC's and SCADA's through a historian database, and wired or wireless networks.  

As a computer systems engineer there is also an opportunity to develop your skills in the support and development of servers, PC's and their operating systems through tools such SOE (Standard Operating Environment), active directory and group policy. Work can involve writing  interfacing firmware in custom electronics, writing specifications for electronic devices and assembling and troubleshooting electronic devices and mobile device applications development eg  work ing with PDAs and Tablet PCs for operators on site to communicate with control systems and data acquisition.

There is the opportunity to travel to various sites to help set up and support staff in the use of VOIP and mobile phones, RIS (Remote Installation Services) images, cisco switches and routers, and two way radio networks.

While developing your technical skills, exposure to and providing assistance to staff also helps build effective verbal communications and team player skills.
