Archaeologist

A graduate archaeologist in Rio Tinto will be given the opportunity to learn and hone their archaeological field skills while also introducing them to how Cultural Heritage management is conducted in a large mining company.  It is a very focussed programme, with the emphasis on professional development, although meaningful heritage projects are used to develop the required skills.

Graduate archaeologists would most likely be based at a regional centre (for example: Dampier or Tom Price (although we do have heritage teams in other areas and majow centres)) where they will be able to participate in all functions performed by the heritage team. There is a large fieldwork component aimed at developing field skills and managing survey teams, so new graduates can expect to be on survey for set periods of time.  While in the office, the more procedural aspects of Cultural Heritage management will be covered, as well as familiarisation with Rio Tinto processes.

Key competencies that will be covered during the graduate programme include:

  • Safety
  • Managing heritage surveys
  • Conducting surveys
  • Reporting on survey results
  • Heritage site management strategies
  • Approvals applications
  • Community consultation
  • Heritage systems development/maintenance
  • Heritage education/training
  • Company processes and structure

The graduate archaeologist programme is integrated with the wider Rio Tinto graduate programme, which enables new graduates to mix with peers from other disciplines and form relationships and networks that will be advantageous over the development of their careers.
