Frequently asked questions
-
Can I work internationally?
The global nature of Rio Tinto's business means opportunities do arise for international placements. These can be secondments, projects, or transfers. -
The closing date has passed - can I still apply?
We have defined campaign dates for all regions, however applications outside these dates can be lodged here. We review applications received here every few weeks, and a member of our recruitment team will contact you once your details have been considered. Please note this option is only available for graduate level recruitment - vacation / internship applications must be received within the advertised campaign dates. -
I have a double degree - if I am not successful for one stream, am I still under consideration for the other?
We generally ask candidates to nominate their primary preference when lodging an application, and that is the first stream we will consider you for. We can also review your details against a second discipline where your background shows equal skills and experience. -
I graduate in the middle of the year - when should I apply?
We recommend you apply to do a summer vacation placement prior to completing your studies. If you are then placed with a Rio Tinto business unit, you will be automatically considered for a graduate position.
If you do not apply for or complete a summer placement with us, you should lodge a graduate application in the year in which you are due to graduate. -
Can I work on a fly in/fly out roster?
Rio Tinto operations have a number of rosters. Depending on the business unit and the site location of the role, this includes fly in/fly out; residential in a regional or remote location; capital city based, and other project-style roles that are capital city based with travel to site as required. What is my career path likely to look like?
Each person has their own story in Rio Tinto. We are a diverse company and offer a whole range of opportunities. We provide a range of testimonials of graduates for you to review - these people are typical of many graduates, not picked because they tell the most attractive tales! My partner is also looking for a job - what can you offer us?
Our businesses frequently have a number of roles available at their sites. Let us know your circumstances, and we may be well placed to recruit you in your respective disciplines. -
Will I be considered for a role outside my home state?
Yes, we consider and place graduates from all regions into our business units. -
Do you have a mid-year vacation / intern programme?
We find that the short break between semesters is not enough time to give students meaningful work, and so do not have a mid-year vacation work campaign. Our major intake is during the summer period, where we recruit students for 10-14 weeks. -
What do you pay for while I am working over summer?
When you work for us over the summer period you perform meaningful and challenging work commensurate with your ability and level of knowledge, and you are remunerated accordingly.
Our businesses will cover the cost of travel to and from your placement. If you are based at a Rio Tinto site, accommodation (including utilities) is either fully paid, or offered at a minimal rate. Capital city based employees are usually required to cover the costs of their own accommodation, but the business unit will assist you to find somewhere suitable. -
I am an international student - can I apply?
Rio Tinto prefers applicants to have the appropriate work visa or citizenship prior to commencing employment. -
I have already graduated - can I still apply?
We welcome applications from recently graduated applicants, so if you have no more than 2 years work experience already you can apply for a graduate role with Rio Tinto. If you have more experience than that, please review the careers page on the Rio Tinto corporate website to learn about other opportunities.
