| February - June | University careers fairs and employer presentations for information. |
| February - March | Advertising: print media, university careers boards, graduate handbooks. |
| February - March | Applications: applications open in February each year and close in early April. Register for the Graduate newsletter to receive advice of the open and closing dates. |
| March - April | Telephone interview: We call to ask for any additional information we need that was not covered in your application. We also ask about your interests and start to check how you might fit in with the Rio Tinto culture. The interview lasts about 30 minutes and before we call, will set up a time that suits you. |
| March - April | Psychological Tests: We ask you to do four tests for us. One is a personality profile (OPQ) that you will do on line. There are no right or wrong answers to this test but it gives us an idea of your preferred work style. The other three tests give us some information on your numerical, verbal and logical reasoning abilities. These are also undertaken online, and you'll likely be asked to do a verification test a little further along in the selection process. |
| March - April | Assessment centres: We ask you to join with a group of other applicants at a central location. We'll provide you with additional information on Rio Tinto and you'll meet line managers and HR representatives from some of our business units. We'll give you an opportunity to demonstrate your strengths in a team exercise, you'll take part in one or two interviews and complete any psychological testing that is required. |
| April - May | Site visits: Rio Tinto sites are located all round Australia. Before we offer you a role in a remote area or regional centre, we want to be sure you know what it's like to live and work there. So we fly you to one of our operations so you can see what it is like, and meet some of the people that you would be working with. We often combine medical examinations with the site visit. |
| April - May | Medical Examination: Health and safety is a priority for us and we want to know that you are fit to work at our operations. For example, if you have asthma, it's not possible to work in aluminium smelters. The medical exam is an important part of that process and is the final step before we make an offer. |
| End of May | Offers made. |
